In the evolving world of dentistry, housecall practices are becoming increasingly popular. Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Elizabeth Ike, the owner of Comfort Home Dental in New Jersey, about her journey from an idea to a thriving housecall practice. Below, you'll find insights from our conversation, perfect for anyone considering a similar path.

Introduction to Dr. Elizabeth Ike

Dr. Elizabeth Ike is a recent graduate of the Dental Housecall Practice Academy and the proud owner of her own housecall dental practice. After completing the course and startup process, she began seeing patients just five months ago, transforming an idea into a bustling reality.

The Journey Begins

The concept of starting a housecall practice took root approximately two and a half years ago for Dr. Ike. The decision was finalized when she relocated to New Jersey. From then on, the preparation involved designing a logo and making consistent efforts towards launching the practice. Dr. Ike officially started seeing patients a year after making the solid commitment.

Advantages of Housecall Practices

A key benefit Dr. Ike highlights about housecall practices is the lower investment compared to brick-and-mortar offices. She points out that even with challenges like moving states and gaining new licenses, achieving a functional practice happens relatively quickly.

Dr. Ike’s Favorite Elements

For Dr. Ike, the most rewarding aspect has been serving grateful patients who genuinely need dental care. She shares that helping patients, even in hospice care, brings immense satisfaction knowing she's eased their discomfort during critical times. This segment of dentistry, though emotionally demanding, offers profound rewards.

Challenges Faced

Starting a new practice isn't without its hurdles. Dr. Ike discusses the business side as one of her greatest challenges, particularly underscoring contract complexities and the barrage of advertising solicitations. Ensuring informed decisions and wisely spending money are critical in these initial stages.

Rapid Growth and Overcoming Competition

Despite the presence of other housecall dentists in her densely populated region, Dr. Ike’s practice has grown quickly. She began by offering services two days a week and expanded as patient demand increased, showcasing the significant need for this service model.

Building a Team

Recently, Dr. Ike hired a part-time assistant to handle administrative tasks, enabling her to focus more on patient care. Although possible to manage single-handedly, having assistance enhances patient service quality and ensures urgent needs are met promptly.

Financial Considerations and Overhead

While it’s less than traditional practices, overhead still exists. Supplies, software, and additional help contribute to ongoing costs. Dr. Ike utilizes cloud-based software to streamline operations, emphasizing its value despite higher costs compared to traditional systems.

Words of Advice

Dr. Ike encourages others considering this path to take the leap. She guarantees that the personal and financial rewards will outweigh the initial investments and challenges.

That's a Wrap!

My conversation with Dr. Elizabeth Ike was an inspiring testament to the growing potential and fulfillment of housecall dental practices. If you're contemplating this career path, both Dr. Ike and I urge you to pursue your dreams—there’s so much to gain.
